Coffee Works & Jump Start Cafe

The first phase of this project involved the redesign and expansion of the company's central location to better communicate its identity as a roaster of fine coffee while expanding opportunities for on-site retail sales.

The facade was redesigned to incorporate more light and activity into what was an older, utilitarian commercial building. The roaster and cafe now has an airy feeling indoors and new opportunities for outdoor seating. The usable space was expanded from 2,000 to 4,000 square feet.

The exterior space, adjacent to Folsom Boulevard and an adjoining alley, has been defined by an overhead trellis and a large planter along the alley's edge. Interior improvements included increased seating for patrons--from four to 20 seats--while still emphasizing the roaster and coffee bean sales.

The second phase included remodeling a retail space into a modern cafe located a block from the State Capitol Building, this cafe was designed as a place for legislators and lobbyists to congregate. Lights and activity visible through floor to ceiling windows act as signage for the cafe. The sparkle of hand blown glass light fixtures over the bar provide even more visual interest for the storefront.

The bakery case and order bar, pushed to the front to be in full visibility from the street allow for comfortable seating wrapping the side and trailing to the back for more private meeting areas. Sidewalk seating spills out onto the street plaza creating an attractive outdoor cafe atmosphere.

This project included a full bakery and kitchen that services Jump Start Cafe as well as the Coffee Works cafe and a wholesale baked goods business. Additionally, there is a chef station for an on-site full grill menu at the cafe.

Multiple conceptual plans were examined with the client to explore possible business options for the cafe.

The design coordinated the special conditions within the space on the first floor of a multi-story city parking structure, including mechanical venting, HVAC replacement and exiting.
