Mather Field/Butterfield Stations
This project involved the design of two light rail stations that are part of the Sacramento Regional Transit District's expansion into the Highway 50 corridor.
Project goals included development of the Mather Field Station as a new Town Center for the suburban community of Rancho Cordova; effective transfer of passengers between rail, bus, automobile, and other modes of transportation; and attraction of additional transit users.
The Butterfield Station, was the end of the line and had an existing inbound platform. MNA designed modifications to the inbound platform and shelter, and the new outbound platform. A focus of the design was to develop better pedestrian connections to the Franchise Tax Board, a large transit user on an adjacent site.
MNA performed extensive pedestrian flow analysis to develop an improved bus stop platform and better connection between the train platform and the bus stop to alleviate substantial pedestrian bottlenecks.
The second station, Mather Field, was the end-of-the-line station for five years. The site design differentiated and connected automobile drop off, timed transfer buses, pedestrian access, and access to the train platform with a central pedestrian plaza.
Mills Station, a historic rail building, was incorporated into the site design at the edge of the central pedestrian plaza.
